Coll Bardolet
Welcome to this virtual exhibition dedicated to the work of Josep Coll Bardolet (1912–2007), one of the artists who best understood and interpreted the light, landscapes and traditions of Mallorca, transforming them into a pictorial legacy of exceptional value.
Born in Campdevànol in 1912, Josep Coll Bardolet began his artistic training at an early age, going on to study and broaden his knowledge at various institutions in Catalonia, Madrid, France and Belgium. This experience provided him with great technical maturity, but it was in Mallorca, and particularly in Valldemossa, that he found the landscape, light and serenity that would definitively shape his career. From his arrival in the 1940s onwards, the island became his deepest source of inspiration and the land he would ultimately make his own.
His painting is distinguished by an extraordinary sensitivity to Mediterranean light, landscape and the human figure. With a refined technique, great compositional elegance and an exceptional ability to capture movement, Coll Bardolet created a highly distinctive body of work that is now an undisputed part of Mallorca’s artistic heritage.
One of the most distinctive contributions of his career was his representation of Mallorcan folklore. His paintings depicting traditional dances, as well as scenes of the Cossiers, xeremiers and Mallorcan peasant women, are much more than mere representations of local customs. Through them, the artist transformed popular traditions into an artistic expression of the highest order, preserving their beauty, symbolism and vitality. Thanks to his brush, an essential part of Mallorca’s intangible cultural heritage has been immortalised with exceptional sensitivity and pictorial quality.
But his connection with Mallorca went far beyond painting. Josep Coll Bardolet actively participated in the island’s cultural life, collaborating on initiatives aimed at promoting and preserving Mallorcan culture. His commitment to this land was constant and sincere, and he consequently received several institutional distinctions that bear witness to the esteem in which he was held by Mallorca.
The ultimate expression of this bond was his decision to establish the Fundació Cultural Coll Bardolet and to bequeath a very significant part of his work to it, so that it would remain forever in Valldemossa, as well as the more than two hundred works he donated to Lluc. This generous gesture represents much more than an artistic donation: it is an act of gratitude towards a land that welcomed him and which he helped to project internationally through his painting. Today, the Foundation has the responsibility of safeguarding, preserving, studying and disseminating this legacy so that it may continue to be a source of knowledge and inspiration for future generations.
This virtual exhibition is fully aligned with that mission. Today, new technologies allow us to expand the boundaries of culture and bring Josep Coll Bardolet’s work closer to people around the world, providing universal access to his creative universe and contributing to the preservation of our artistic heritage.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to KAROI ART for its involvement, and I hope that this virtual journey will allow you to discover, or rediscover, the work of an exceptional artist who made Mallorca the centre of his inspiration and who knew how to combine professionalism and sensitivity in the dissemination of cultural heritage. Thanks to its platform, this virtual exhibition has become a reality, enabling us to offer an innovative and accessible new visiting experience that complements the work the Foundation has been carrying out for many years. This collaboration is a magnificent example of how technology can become an essential ally in the preservation and dissemination of art.
On behalf of the Fundació Cultural Coll Bardolet, I thank you for your visit and invite you to enjoy this journey through the creative universe of a painter who transformed his love for Mallorca into a legacy that today belongs to us all.
