Centenarians Gaspar Riera 2022.
It is still to make a critical narrative of landscaping in the Balearic Islands in the second half of the twentieth century but without a doubt, the simplification, balance and silence of the landscape that Gaspar Riera achieved will have a very prominent place, as the last painter artist who treated the earth, the landscape, like a a living being, indomitable, closing the freedom he didn’t have and being able to show it as it was, fleeing from the mellow chromaticism that was in fashion and closing his own voice as a painter.
Born in Estellencs, on May 9, 1922, he never received any training in artistic subjects. He was the son of some coal miners, but practically from the cradle he began to paint, to draw and to show his interest in the arts in general (paintings, poetry, photography,).
He focused his work, especially, on painting and portraying the landscape of Mallorca and he did it in such a revolutionary way that revolutionized the predominant landscaping until then and provided a vision of his own, different look from what was traditionally done.
A person of great sensitivity, a lover of silence, authenticity, and sincerity, in love with nature and Mallorca, he traveled the roads and paths for years carrying his painter’s suitcase and his camera. His work surprises us by its modernity and validity, not only in the plastic work but also in the literary and photographic. A color palette that has breadth and diversity throughout his oil technique on canvases of various qualities and textures.
The study of his work allows us to visualize a landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana that is evolving towards the discovery of the Pla de Mallorca, where the sowing of wheat and land throughout the year cause a palette of colors that, unpublished, until now, connects us in a forceful way that relates us to abtractism in a unique way.
He left us on June 10, 1993 and L’Ajuntament de Palma, in the municipal plenary session of June 24, 1993 gave him the name of a street in the neighborhood of Cala Major, near the hotel where he worked. An anthological exhibition of his work was also approved, but finally it was never organized.
