Ibiza, naturally. Joan Torres Collection
Ibiza, naturally. For the light that fills the canvases of these fifty oil paintings could not be from any other place in the world. Ibiza, naturally. For every brushstroke (or most of them) shows the most authentic Ibiza, the one that was lost along the way and can only be seen now through the eternal windows of those who painted it. Ibiza, naturally. For even in those paintings (a few) where the island cannot be seen, where the strokes travel to Menorca, Peru, Paris, Morocco or Venice, its reflection is still there. Ibiza, naturally. For that is where all of them were born or arrived, lived or died, stayed or left, and painted over and over and over again: Laureà Barrau, Voldemar Boberman, Vicent Ferrer Guasch, Bartolomé García Tur, Ignacio Gil, Joan Llaverías, Anselmo Miguel Nieto, José Pardo Forteza, Toni Pomar, Chico Prats, Narcís Puget, José A. Roberto Torrent, Adrián Rosa, Rigoberto Soler, Mario Stafforini, Josep Tarrés and Médard Verburgh.
Ibiza, naturally. For few collections show it in so many colours and textures. And from so many points of view. From Ferrer Guasch’s thousand whites to Puget’s earthy terracottas, from Boberman’s serene darkness to Llaverías’ vibrant tones. From Barrau’s fleeting, chased scenes to Ignacio Gil’s compositions in different planes. From Soler’s clean strokes to Stafforini’s thick brushstrokes.
Ibiza, naturally. For it is like a stroll through its spots. The port, the whitewashed houses, the markets, La Marina streets, the prickly pears, the small islands, the temples, the blooming almond trees, the parade ground, the nearly unspoilt Puig de Missa, Dalt Vila streets… And its people. Women at mass, fishermen repairing nets, girls leaving mass, farmers and their goats, families having a meal together in the kitchen, a sonador (drummer) on a feast day, children climbing up a woman’s skirt, a man quenching his thirst drinking from a water jug…
Ibiza, naturally, from the 1920s to the twilight of the last century. Ibiza, naturally. For their palettes forever preserved the island it once was. And the island that, at times, in some places, is still glimpsed. Enjoy the tour through Ibiza, naturally.
